The shade here does the work: a broad faux silk drum, raw cocoa on the outside with a grecian bronze lining that warms the light as it falls through. It measures 50cm across, deep enough to keep the E27 lampholders well hidden, and a frosted acrylic diffuser closes the underside so you never look straight at a lamp. Above it, the suspension and ceiling plate are finished in satin nickel, a soft brushed silver that lets the fabric take the attention.

Light spreads sideways through the silk and downwards through the diffuser, which makes for a generous, even wash rather than a tight pool. That suits a dining table, a wide hallway, or the centre of a sitting room with ceiling height to spare, and the long flex means it can hang low over a table or sit up closer to the ceiling in a room with less headroom. We reach for this one where a smaller shade would look mean in a big space. It will dim, given suitable lamps and a dimmer of the right type.

The metalwork is finished in satin nickel, the shade is dual faux silk with the cocoa outside and the bronze within, and the diffuser is polycarbonate acrylic. Keep the fabric dust free with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum on its lowest setting, and give the diffuser an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth once the power is off and the fitting cold. It carries a one year warranty. How big is the shade?

The drum is 500mm in diameter and 200mm deep, with an overall body height of 370mm, so it reads as a large shade in the room.

What is the hanging drop?

It hangs from a minimum of 405mm up to a maximum of 3330mm, which covers standard ceilings and tall ones alike.

Which lamps does it take?

Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the recommended choice and give the most even glow behind the frosted diffuser.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps together with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer are supplied with the fitting.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and built for dry rooms such as dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and sitting rooms, away from splashes and steam.

How should the faux silk be cleaned?

Brush it gently with a soft, dry brush, or use a vacuum upholstery head on its lowest setting. Avoid sprays and solvents on the fabric.
