Description

The shade here is a wide grey faux silk drum, 50cm across, lined in white laminate so the light inside stays bright rather than muddied. It hangs from an antique brass frame, with a frosted acrylic diffuser trimmed in matching brass closing the base, which takes the edge off the glare when you sit beneath it. Three E27 lampholders sit inside, spreading light evenly across a table. It is a large shade, so give it a room with some breadth to carry it.

Its natural home is above a dining table or a kitchen island, though it works just as well over a wide landing or in a bedroom where a single lamp would look mean. The drop can be shortened for a low ceiling or let out a long way in a stairwell, so it suits cottage rooms and tall Victorian ones alike. We would put LED GLS lamps in it and pair them with a dimmer, for a low level over dinner and full brightness when the table is cleared. Suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer are needed for that.

Fabric over a metal frame, with the acrylic diffuser and its brass trim giving the lower edge some weight. Dust the silk with a soft brush now and then; the diffuser needs no more than a barely damp cloth, once the power is off and the lamps have cooled. Keep it to dry rooms: hallways and dining rooms, not bathrooms. It carries a one year warranty.
