Description

Three lamps sit behind a 50cm faux silk shade in black, lined in white laminate so the light comes back warm rather than flat. Beneath them a frosted acrylic diffuser with antique brass trim closes the base, softening the view upward and spreading the light down evenly. The drop is adjustable, from a short hang to something close to 3.3m, so it can hover low over a table or hold its height in a tall room.

We reach for a wide shade like this over a dining table or a kitchen island, where a broad pool of light matters far more than a narrow beam. It works just as well as the main light in a big sitting room, or over the turn of a generous landing. Each holder takes an E27 lamp and we would choose LED GLS globes, since a diffused fitting rewards a soft, even source rather than a bright point. With suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer, the light can be brought down for the evening.

The frame is metal in an antique brass finish, with the laminated fabric shade above and the acrylic diffuser held across the base. Switch off at the wall and let the lamps cool, then take dust off the fabric with a soft brush and give the acrylic a wipe with a barely damp cloth, drying it straight after. Nothing about the finish needs polish or spray cleaner. It carries a one year warranty. Lamps are not included. The wider Baymont range runs to flush and semi flush fittings and to linear pendants, offered in polished chrome, satin nickel, white and satin black alongside this antique brass, which is useful if you want the same hardware carried from a hallway through to the room it opens into.
