A close-fitting ceiling light with a shallow drum shade in black faux silk, lined with a white laminate that bounces light back down through a frosted acrylic diffuser set into the base. The diffuser softens the glare from the three E27 lamps inside and gives an even wash rather than bright spots on the floor. At 30cm across it reads as a neat disc on the ceiling, and the black outer face keeps it defined against white plaster while the pale lining stops the shade going heavy overhead.

This is the sort of fitting we reach for in rooms where a pendant would hang into head height: hallways, landings, bedrooms, small dining rooms and box rooms with a low ceiling. Three lamps spread the load, so it lights a family bathroom-sized space comfortably without a second fitting, and it will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer. We would put an LED GLS lamp in each holder for cool running and a lower bill; the pearl finish suits the diffuser better than a clear glass lamp.

The shade is fabric over a laminate liner, and the diffuser panel is acrylic rather than glass, which keeps the whole thing light in the hand. Keep it looking fresh by brushing the shade down with a clean, dry paintbrush or the soft brush head of a vacuum, and wipe the acrylic with a barely damp cloth once the power is off and the lamps have gone cold; no sprays or solvents on either surface. It carries a one year warranty. What size are the lamp holders and how many does it take?

It takes three E27 screw-cap lamps, each rated to a maximum of 20W.

Which lamps do you suggest?

An LED GLS A60 shape in each holder. Pearl or opal glass gives the most even result behind the frosted acrylic.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and a dimmer switch matched to them. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

How much space does it need below the ceiling?

It projects 17cm from the ceiling and measures 30cm in diameter, so it stays well clear of head height in a hallway or landing.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or a covered porch?

No. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, so keep it away from splashes and anywhere exposed to weather.

How do I clean the acrylic diffuser?

Switch off at the wall, let the lamps cool, then wipe the acrylic with a cloth wrung out in plain water and dry it straight away. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which scuff acrylic.
