Description

Round, shallow and quiet once it is in place, this is the plainest sort of downlight: a matt white face, a GU10 lampholder already fitted, and an inner ring that swivels so the beam can be tipped away from vertical. It sits in an 80mm cut-out, which is the common size across most of the range, and it accepts a lamp of up to 50W. We would fit an LED reflector lamp here, and if you want the light on a dimmer, choose a lamp that is marked as dimmable.

The tilt is what makes it useful. Aim a run of them at a kitchen worktop, along a hallway wall, at the shelves in an alcove or across a picture, and you get light where it is wanted rather than a flat wash on the floor. The narrow trim keeps things calm in a low ceiling, so it suits bedrooms and landings as well as busier rooms. Keep it to rooms that stay dry; a bathroom zone or a covered porch needs a sealed fitting instead.

The finish is a flat, low sheen white that disappears against a painted ceiling, and the fitting is light in the hand. Cleaning asks very little: wait until the lamp is cold, then run a soft cloth over the trim and the reflector cone, keeping polishes and scouring creams well away from the white face. It carries a one year warranty. The same round swivel head comes in aluminium, sand black and satin nickel with chrome if you want the trim to read as metal, and there is a square version of this shape in matt white for rooms where the joinery is all straight lines. Lamps are not supplied, so add a GU10 to suit the beam you are after.
