A broad drum shade carries the light here, white on the outside with a gold foil lining that warms everything passing through it. Inside, five arms fan out from the centre, each ending in a small candle lamp holder, so the glow spreads across the full width rather than pooling in one spot. Frame, arms and ceiling plate are finished in champagne gold, a softer and slightly pinker tone than bright brass. At 60cm across it sits low and wide, more horizontal band than tall column, and the drop can be taken up or let down to suit the room.

It earns its keep over a dining table, where the width covers most place settings and the lining throws a warm cast down onto plates and glasses. It also works over a kitchen island, in a wide hallway, or on a generous landing with the height to let it float. We would put warm white LED candles in it, and where the circuit runs through a dimmer, choose dimmable lamps so the light can be brought right down for an evening meal. Lamps are not included.

The shade is a laminate panel with foil applied to the inner face, carried on a plated metal frame. Keep both dry and the colour holds. Dust the shade edge with a soft brush, and lift any kitchen grease off the metalwork with a barely damp cloth, nothing solvent based. It is wired for indoor rooms on a household circuit and takes an earth connection. It carries a one year warranty. Pair it with clear candle lamps if you want a little sparkle bouncing off the lining, or opal ones for a flatter, calmer wash across the table.

The drop can be set anywhere between 340mm and 1800mm, so it works over a table at low level or in a tall stairwell let down further.

What lamps does it take?

Five E14 candle lamps, up to 20W each. LED candles in the C35 shape are the sensible choice and keep the shade cool and clean.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer come with it.

How wide and how deep is the shade?

It measures 600mm across and 220mm deep, which gives it a low, wide profile rather than a tall drum.

How should the gold foil lining be cleaned?

Dry dusting only. The foil is applied to the inner face of a laminate panel, so avoid sprays, damp cloths and any polish on that surface.
