Description

Three arms curve out from a central stem in antique brass, each carrying an E14 candle lamp beneath a broad drum shade. The shade is faux silk, midnight black outside with a green olive lining, so light reaching the table below comes through warmed. At 50cm across it reads wide rather than tall, and the chain gives a drop that can be set as far as 1.8m.

We reach for a shape like this over a dining table or a long kitchen island, where a wide shade spreads light across the surface without crowding the room above it. It works equally well in a hallway with the height to carry it, or in a sitting room where the main light sits centrally and needs some presence. Fit dimmable lamps and the level can be brought down for the evening, though a dimmer switch is not part of the package. For anyone furnishing a period room, the brass and the deep shade colour settle in quickly.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, a softened tone that sits happily against darker walls and older woodwork. Faux silk picks up dust more readily than glass, so run a soft brush over the shade now and then and keep water off the fabric; the brass asks for no more than a dry cloth.
