Three arms rise from a central antique brass stem, each taking a small candle lamp, and a single faux silk shade sits over the group. It measures 50cm across and 20cm deep, so what you get is a wide, soft wash of light rather than anything tight or directional. Grey outside and white laminate within, the shade reads as quiet and neutral against the warm, slightly aged tone of the brass. It hangs on a chain, so the height is yours to set.

This is the size we reach for above a round dining table, in a wide hallway, or in a bedroom where a narrower pendant would look lost. The chain gives a useful spread of drop, so it can sit high and out of the way in a room of ordinary height, or come down closer over a table top. It takes candle lamps on the E14 socket, and LED is what we would choose. Fit dimmable lamps and it will run happily from a dimmer, though the dimmer itself is a separate purchase.

The frame is metal in an antique brass finish, and the shade is faux silk over a laminate liner, which holds its shape and keeps the colour flat and even. Keep it to dry rooms indoors; kitchens and dining rooms are fine, bathrooms and porches are not. Dust the fabric with a soft brush and take a dry cloth to the brass, skipping polishes, sprays and anything damp, as fabric shades mark easily. It carries a one year warranty. Grey with antique brass is an easy pairing to build around, sitting well with pale walls, oak and darker painted woodwork alike. Lamps are not included.

How low will it hang?

The chain allows a drop of between 340mm and 1800mm, measured from the ceiling to the base of the fitting, so it can be shortened for lower ceilings or run out over a table.

What lamps does it take, and what is the maximum wattage?

It takes three E14 candle lamps, C35 shape, rated up to 20W each. LED candles are the sensible choice here as they stay cooler inside a fabric shade.

Can I dim it?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and pair it with a suitable dimmer switch. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer are supplied.

How big is the shade?

500mm in diameter and 200mm deep, with a body height of 220mm. It is a broad shade, so allow room around it on a narrow landing or in a small hallway.

How should I clean the shade?

Switch off at the wall first and let everything cool. Then use a soft brush or the upholstery attachment on a vacuum at low suction. Avoid water, solvents and metal polish on the faux silk.
