Description

Three E14 lampholders sit beneath a single wide shade finished in gold foil and lined in white, so the light comes back soft and warm instead of picking up a hard metallic cast. At 50cm across, the shade covers a good spread from a single point on the ceiling. The frame is antique brass, a slightly darkened, low-shine version of the metal that sits more quietly in a room than bright gold, and a chain suspension means the drop can be set high or low.

We would hang this over a dining table, where the width suits a rectangular or round top and the shade keeps glare off faces below. It also works in a hallway or on a landing where there is height to play with. It is one we reach for where a room needs one generous shade rather than a cluster of small ones. Candle lamps are the ones to use here, and if you want the light to come down for evenings, fit dimmable ones and pair them with a suitable dimmer. It suits rooms styled around brass and warm neutrals.

The shade is a gold leaf surface over a white laminate lining, so the outer face has the faint mottling of foil rather than a flat printed gold. That lining is what makes the difference in use, throwing light downward rather than losing it into the foil. Keep it dry when cleaning: a soft brush or dust cloth over the outside, and nothing wet on the foil, which will mark. The brasswork can be wiped with the same cloth once the lamps have cooled.
