Description

Three tiers of clear Asfour crystal on a polished chrome frame, arranged so the strands overlap and pass light between them. It measures 93cm across, which puts it firmly in large-piece territory, and the 29 candle lamps sit down among the crystal rather than in front of it, so what reaches the room is scattered rather than direct. Switched on, the whole body of it lights up; switched off, it still reads as a full, bright shape.

This is a fitting for rooms with height and floor space to give it: a long dining table, the turn of a staircase, a double-height hall, or a drawing room with a good deal of ceiling above the seating. We would hang it centrally and let it do the ambient work, with table lamps or wall lights handling anything closer. It will dim if you fit dimmable lamps and pair it with a suitable dimmer, which is worth doing over a dining table where you want the level to fall as the evening goes on.

The crystal is cut glass and the metalwork is polished to a mirror finish, so both reward the occasional going-over: with the supply off and the lamps cold, work around the tiers with a soft lint-free cloth, taking the drops a few at a time and leaving sprays and solvents well alone. It carries a one year warranty. The Alexandra range runs from compact ceiling fittings up through spiral pendants, and the sizes come in gold as well as polished chrome, so a hall and a landing can be kept in step. Lamps are not included.
