5.8GHz Microwave Sensor Module - 2-8m Detection Range

The Knightsbridge OS008 is a 5.8GHz microwave sensor module designed to be mounted inside light fittings, providing 360° motion detection across an adjustable range of 2-8m radius. The module measures 76.7mm x 29.4mm and fits into most pendant, ceiling and wall light back boxes with sufficient depth for the wiring connections and DIP switch configuration panel.

Microwave sensors detect movement by emitting 5.8GHz radio waves and measuring the reflected signal — unlike passive infrared (PIR) sensors, they can detect motion through non-metallic materials like glass, thin plastics and lightweight fabric shades. This makes them suitable for concealed installation inside decorative light fittings where a visible PIR lens would compromise the fitting's appearance. The module includes adjustable lux control to prevent activation in daylight and adjustable time control to set how long the light stays on after the last detected movement.

Rated for loads up to 250W incandescent or 250W LED on 230V 50Hz mains, the module handles standard UK residential lighting circuits. The IP20 rating limits use to dry indoor locations — the module is not suitable for bathrooms, outdoor fittings or any location exposed to moisture. The white polycarbonate housing blends into the internal structure of most light fittings. Configuration is via a six-position DIP switch panel on the side of the module, allowing the detection range, lux threshold and time delay to be adjusted without rewiring.

What's the difference between microwave and PIR sensors?

PIR (passive infrared) sensors detect heat changes and require a direct line of sight to the movement. Microwave sensors emit radio waves that can pass through non-metallic materials like glass, thin plastic and fabric shades, making them suitable for concealed installation inside decorative light fittings. Microwave sensors are more sensitive to small movements and can detect through obstacles, but may also trigger more false activations if not calibrated correctly.

How is the detection range adjusted?

The module has a six-position DIP switch panel on the side that controls detection range (2-8m radius), lux threshold (the ambient light level below which the sensor will activate) and time delay (how long the light stays on after the last detected movement). Can it be used in bathrooms or outdoor fittings?

No. The IP20 rating means the module is suitable only for dry indoor locations. It cannot be used in bathrooms, outdoor fittings, or any location where moisture or dust ingress is possible.

What light fittings is it compatible with?
