Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX intermediate switch provides three-or-more-point control of a lighting circuit, allowing a single set of lights to be switched on or off from three different locations. The 86mm square plate has gently rounded edges and a white thermoset resin finish with an anti-microbial coating tested to ISO 22196:2011, making it well-suited to hallways, stairwells and other high-traffic circulation spaces.

An intermediate switch is wired between two two-way switches in a three-way lighting circuit. It functions as the middle switching point in arrangements where lights need to be controlled from a landing, top of stairs and bottom of stairs, or from either end of a long hallway plus a midpoint. The 10AX rating handles lighting loads up to 2,300W at 230V, suitable for most domestic and light commercial lighting circuits.

The 7mm projection from the wall gives a low-profile presence, and the rounded edges reduce the sharp corner feel of traditional square plates. The plate includes screw cap covers that hide the fixing screws once installation is complete. The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth and is certified to EN 60669-1 for electrical safety. What is an intermediate switch used for?

An intermediate switch allows a lighting circuit to be controlled from three or more locations. It is wired between two two-way switches, creating a three-way circuit. This is common in stairwells where you need switches at the top, bottom and landing, or in long hallways with switches at both ends and a midpoint.

What back box depth is required?

A minimum 16mm back box depth is needed. The 7mm plate projection means the total depth from wall to front of plate is approximately 23mm once installed.

What does the anti-microbial coating do?

The plate surface is treated with an anti-microbial coating tested to ISO 22196:2011. This reduces bacterial growth on the switch surface, which is useful in high-traffic areas like hallways and stairwells where multiple people touch the same switch daily.

Can this be used with LED lighting?

Yes. The 10AX rating supports loads up to 2,300W at 230V, which covers most LED, halogen and incandescent lighting circuits. The switch is a mechanical contact switch and does not interfere with LED dimming circuits when used in non-dimmed applications.
