Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch controls lighting from a third position in a 3-way circuit, typically used on stairs or landings where switches are needed at both ends and at a mid-point. The switch has a pearl finish flat plate with a matching metal rocker, giving a 2.5mm projection from the wall once installed — one of the lowest profiles in the Knightsbridge range.

Intermediate switches differ from two-way switches by routing four terminals rather than three, allowing the third switch in a circuit to reverse the path between the two-way switches at either end. This is why they're found on staircases with landings, or hallways with three entry points. The 10AX rating handles standard lighting loads up to 2,300W on 230V mains, covering both LED and tungsten circuits.

The flat plate is cut from premium-grade steel and finished in a soft pearlescent coating that sits between white and cream, giving a warm neutral that pairs with magnolia, soft greys and warm whites without the clinical brightness of pure white. The built-in gasket provides a seal between the plate and the mounting box, reducing dust ingress and improving IP20 moisture resistance. The 16mm minimum back box depth makes this compatible with shallow back boxes in partition walls and period properties where depth is limited.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between an intermediate switch and a two-way switch?

A two-way switch controls a light from two positions (e.g. top and bottom of stairs). An intermediate switch sits between two two-way switches, creating a third control point. You need an intermediate whenever you want to control a light from more than two locations — common on staircases with landings or long hallways with three doorways.

What back box depth is needed?

The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth. This shallow requirement makes it suitable for partition walls and period properties where back box depth is limited.

Is the pearl finish closer to white or cream?

The pearl finish sits between white and cream, with a soft pearlescent coating that reads as a warm neutral. It pairs well with magnolia, soft greys and warm whites without the clinical brightness of pure white switches.

What other finishes are available in this range?

Knightsbridge produces this flat plate style in multiple finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, brushed brass, matt black and white. Search for 'Knightsbridge flat plate intermediate' to see other variants in stock at Niori.
