Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch sits in the middle position of a three-switch lighting circuit, allowing a single light fitting to be controlled from three separate wall positions. It carries a 10AX rating, handling loads up to 2,300W on 230V mains, which covers most domestic lighting circuits including LED, halogen and incandescent fittings.
Designed for stairs, extended hallways and large rooms where lighting control is needed from multiple positions, the intermediate switch works in conjunction with two 2-way switches to complete the circuit. The flat plate design sits flush to the wall with a 2.5mm projection from the mounting box, and the metal rocker matches the brushed chrome faceplate for a uniform finish. A built-in gasket behind the plate provides a degree of moisture resistance and helps prevent dust ingress in high-traffic areas.
The 87.5mm square plate is constructed from premium-grade steel with a directional brushed chrome finish that softens reflections and pairs comfortably with stainless appliances, chrome taps and contemporary metal fixtures. The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth for installation, making it compatible with standard shallow mounting boxes in plasterboard or masonry walls. Certified to EN 60669-1, the switch carries a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch and when is it needed?
An intermediate switch sits between two 2-way switches in a three-switch lighting circuit, allowing a single light to be controlled from three separate wall positions. This configuration is common on stairs with a switch at the bottom, middle landing, and top, or in large open-plan rooms where lighting control is needed from multiple doorways.
What back box depth is required?
The switch requires a minimum 16mm mounting box depth. The ultra-flat design with 2.5mm projection makes it compatible with shallow back boxes in plasterboard walls or dry-lining applications.
What load can a 10AX switch handle?
The 10AX rating handles loads up to 2,300W on 230V mains. This covers most domestic lighting circuits including multiple LED fittings, halogen downlights, and traditional incandescent bulbs.
What other finishes are available in this flat plate range?
Knightsbridge produces this flat plate intermediate switch in polished chrome, brushed brass, polished brass, matt black, white and other finishes. Use the search function or category filters to find other variants in stock at Niori.
