Description

The Yarnwell is a single pendant with a clear bubble glass dome, 260mm across, hung on a drop that adjusts between 440mm and 1540mm. The glass is worked with a bubbled surface, so light breaks up as it passes through instead of throwing one hard shadow onto the surface below. It takes a single E27 LED lamp at 10W and weighs 2.7kg, light enough for a straightforward ceiling fixing.

A pendant this size is happiest in company. Two or three in a row over a kitchen island or a breakfast bar give you light where you work without blocking the view across the room, while one on its own does the job above a side table, in a small hall or at the turn of a staircase. Because the glass is clear, the shape of the lamp shows through, so a decorative filament style LED is worth the extra outlay. It is dimmable with a compatible lamp and dimmer switch, which is useful when the same ceiling light has to cover both cooking and eating. We would hang three over a long island and keep one on its own above a side table.

The suspension and ceiling plate are metal and the dome is glass, and both clean up with very little effort: a barely damp cloth on the glass, a dry one on the metal, and nothing in the way of spray polish. The drop is set when the pendant is installed by shortening the cable, so settle on the height before the electrician starts. Rated IP20, it is a fitting for dry rooms rather than bathrooms. If you like the shape but want a warmer mottled surface, the Yarnwell mercury pendant uses the same body with silvered glass.
