Description

The NU-X NCH-4 Ukiyo-E is a mini chorus pedal that packs three classic chorus effects into a compact aluminium die-cast chassis. Ukiyo-E translates from Japanese as 'pictures of the floating world', which suits the dreamy, drifting sounds these effects produce. ST Chorus is modelled on a well-known rock stereo chorus, SCH-1 gives a true-to-life emulation of a much-revered classic pedal from Japan, and CE-1 emulates the soft analog tones of the first mass-production chorus effect. You select between the three using the illuminated push button sat above the controls.

Three controls give you room to shape each effect: Rate sets the speed of the modulation, Width adjusts the depth, and Intensity handles the overall level of the effect. The footswitch engages or disengages the pedal, and a smart tap tempo feature reads two quick presses of the footswitch to set the Rate. Holding the mode button during power-up switches between mono and stereo output, with stereo needing a stereo jack lead. You can also choose buffered or true bypass to suit your signal chain, and there is a USB-C port for any future firmware updates.

The chassis is strong and lightweight, so it earns its place on a crowded pedalboard without adding much weight. This pedal runs on a 9V centre-negative DC power supply drawing 100mA, which is not supplied. Our compatible power supply is item 173.290UK. It suits chordal washes and adds jangle to strummed or picked passages, whether you want subtle movement or a fuller, swirling tone. Note that some players will know this effect as a modulation pedal, but chorus is the standard term here.
