Description

The Cherub WST-551C Orig-Tune is a clip-on tuner (clip-on tuner in both UK and US usage) with an ultra-clear segmented colour display. The bright, easy-to-read screen takes its cue from the original clip tuners, showing the current note and how close you are to pitch at a glance. It runs in chromatic mode automatically, so you simply clip it on, play a note, and read the result.

Operation is kept to two buttons. Holding the rear power button switches tuning on, while the button alongside it adjusts the A4 reference frequency across a 435 to 445Hz range. Tuning stability sits at ±1 cent, and the tuning range covers A0 (27.50Hz) up to C8 (4186Hz), which suits guitar, bass and a range of other string instruments. There are no menus to dig through, just a straightforward tool for getting in tune.

Unlike older clip tuners that rely on a coin cell, the Orig-Tune has its own internal 3.7V, 150mAh rechargeable battery that tops up over USB. Battery life is around 2.5 hours per charge. At 53 x 49 x 16mm and 20.5g, it clips onto a headstock without adding noticeable weight. We think it makes a sensible, no-nonsense choice for guitarists, bassists and other string players who want reliable pitch on hand whenever they need it.
