Description

The Amberhurst wall light sets a 300mm wide panel of Tiffany-style leaded glass against the wall, projecting only 120mm and standing 200mm high. The multicoloured glass is cut piece by piece and joined with soldered seams over a metal frame, and because the shade is shallow it reads almost as a lit panel rather than a bracket lamp. One E14 golf ball bulb of up to 40W is needed and is supplied separately. The fitting weighs 0.8kg, so it goes onto most walls easily with the right fixings.

A slim wall sconce like this suits places where a bracket lamp would be in the way: a narrow hallway, a stairwell, a landing, the side of a chimney breast, or above a bedside where the light needs to sit close to the wall. Two of them along a hallway give a low, even light that a single ceiling fitting cannot manage, and they work well as the evening light in a sitting room with the main light off. The traditional pattern suits older houses and adds colour to plain paint. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The panel is soldered leaded glass on a metal frame, wired as a Class 2 double insulated fitting, so no earth is needed at the wall box, though installation still belongs to a qualified electrician. It is dimmable with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer, which we would do where wall lights carry the evening. Dust the glass with a dry soft cloth or a soft brush and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, drying at once and keeping solvents and abrasive creams off the solder.
