Description

The Polar is an 8.2cm diameter surface-mounted downlight with a cylindrical matt black aluminium body and a GX53 bulb base. The fitting mounts directly to the ceiling without needing a recessed cavity, making it suitable for solid ceilings, pre-fabricated ceilings and spaces where cutting into the structure is not practical. The GX53 base accepts a standard 15W GX53 bulb (sold separately), which is a low-profile twist-and-lock fitting commonly used in compact downlights.

Designed for task and accent lighting in kitchens, hallways, home offices and utility rooms, the Polar directs light downwards in a focused beam without spreading to the sides. The 8.5cm height projects below the ceiling, so the fitting works best in rooms with ceiling heights of 2.4m or higher where the downlight does not visually compress the space. The matt black finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which keeps the fitting itself visually recessive even when installed in clusters or rows.

The aluminium body dissipates heat from the bulb, while the plastic diffuser at the base softens the light aperture and prevents direct glare from the bulb. The IP20 rating means the fitting is suitable for general indoor use but not for bathrooms, wet rooms or outdoor locations. The compact footprint allows multiple Polars to be spaced at 1-1.5m intervals along a kitchen worktop or hallway ceiling to create even coverage without needing large-diameter fittings.

What bulb does it take?

The Polar uses a GX53 bulb, which is a low-profile twist-and-lock fitting. Maximum wattage is 15W. GX53 bulbs are sold separately and are available in LED, halogen and CFL versions. Most users choose a warm-white LED at 2700K-3000K for general task lighting.

Can it be installed in a bathroom?

No. The IP20 rating means the fitting is suitable for dry indoor spaces only. For bathrooms and wet rooms you need a downlight with an IP44 or IP65 rating depending on the zone.

Does it need a recessed cavity in the ceiling?

No. The Polar is a surface-mounted downlight that fixes directly to the ceiling surface. This makes it suitable for solid ceilings, pre-fabricated ceilings and installations where cutting into the ceiling structure is not practical.

How is it wired?

The fitting connects to mains voltage (220-240V AC) via a ceiling rose or junction box. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with Part P Building Regulations. See the product manual for full wiring details.
