Modern Pendant Lights

Modern pendant lights hang a single point of light where you need it, over an island, a table or a bedside. Our range covers single pendants, multi-light clusters and glass globe designs in alabaster, brass, chrome and matt black, with integrated LED and dimmable options. From compact fittings to wide clusters for a dining table, there is a shape and drop here for most rooms.

Single, Cluster and Glass Pendants Explained

Most modern pendants in our range fall into a few clear forms, and the right one usually follows what sits beneath it. A single pendant marks one spot, a cluster fills a wider area with several drops, and glass designs soften the light in every direction. Knowing which you need makes the rest of the choice, size, finish and drop, much easier.

Single pendants

A single pendant hangs one shade or diffuser from one ceiling point. It is the natural choice over a bedside, a reading chair, a small round table, or either side of a kitchen island in a matched pair. Because it reads as one clean line, it suits rooms where you want light without visual weight. The drop on most of ours can be shortened at installation to suit your ceiling height.

Cluster pendants

A cluster gathers several drops from one canopy, usually at staggered heights so the group reads with depth from every angle. Clusters work where a single pendant would look lost, over a large island, a stairwell or a generous dining table, and they give a decorative focal point without the full spread of a chandelier. We stock clusters in glass globes, alabaster and mixed-metal finishes.

Glass and globe designs

Glass pendants, from opal and smoked spheres to ribbed and seeded shades, spread a softer, more even light than a solid metal shade. Opal glass in particular glows across its whole surface, which makes it a gentle choice for a dining table or bedroom where you sit beneath the light. Clear and smoked glass keep more of the bulb on show for a sharper look.

How High to Hang a Pendant Light

Hanging height is the detail people most often get wrong, and it changes with what the pendant sits above. The working rules are simple:

  • Over a kitchen island or worktop, hang the underside 70 to 90cm above the surface, high enough to clear sightlines and low enough to light the work.
  • Over a dining table, aim for 75 to 90cm above the tabletop, so the light pools on the table without blocking faces across it.
  • In an open walkway or hallway, keep at least 2 metres of clear height beneath the lowest point.
  • If your ceiling is above 2.6 metres, let the pendant drop a little lower so it still relates to the surface below rather than floating near the ceiling.

Most of our pendants come with adjustable cable, rod or chain, so the drop can be set on the day to suit your ceiling.

How Many Pendants Over a Kitchen Island

Over an island, the number of pendants follows the length of the run. As a guide, one pendant suits an island up to about 1 metre, two spread comfortably across 1.2 to 1.8 metres, and three suit runs of 2 metres or more. Space them evenly and leave 15 to 30cm of clear worktop at each end, so the group sits centred over the island rather than crowding the edges. If you would rather have one continuous line of light instead of separate drops, a linear suspension from our modern chandeliers range is often the tidier answer.

Light Output, Bulb Fittings and Ratings

Pendants in this range split between integrated LED designs, where the light source is built in and the diffuser glows evenly, and versions that take standard E27, E14 or GU10 lamps so you can pick your own bulbs and replace them over time. Warm white is the most common output, which suits kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms. Many are dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmer, though it is worth checking the individual listing. Every pendant here carries an IP20 rating, which makes it right for dry indoor rooms away from steam and splash zones.

Finishes and Materials at a Glance

Alabaster leads the decorative end of the range, giving a soft, even glow when lit and a veined, stone-like surface when off. Glass follows in opal, smoked, clear and ribbed forms, alongside metalwork in matt black, brass, brushed gold, chrome and white. Lighter finishes keep a pendant visually quiet, while black and smoked glass make more of a feature. If you want a larger, more decorative fitting for the same spot, our modern chandeliers are the place to look, and for a flush option where there is no room to hang, see our modern ceiling lights.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pendant light?

A pendant light is a single fitting that hangs from the ceiling on a cable, rod or chain, with the light held at the height you choose rather than fixed flush to the ceiling. It differs from a chandelier, which is usually larger and multi-armed, and from a flush ceiling light, which sits tight against the ceiling. Pendants suit spots where you want directed, lowered light, such as over an island, a table or a bedside.

How high should a pendant light hang over an island or counter?

Hang the underside 70 to 90cm above the worktop. That keeps light on the surface where you prep without the fitting blocking sightlines across the kitchen. Over a dining table, use a similar 75 to 90cm above the tabletop. In a walkway or hallway, keep at least 2 metres of clear height beneath the lowest point. Most of our pendants have adjustable cable or rod, so the drop can be set to suit your ceiling on the day.

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?

Work from the length of the island. One pendant suits a run up to about 1 metre, two spread well across 1.2 to 1.8 metres, and three suit 2 metres or more. Space them evenly and leave 15 to 30cm of clear worktop at each end so the group sits centred. If you would prefer one unbroken line of light rather than separate drops, a linear suspension is often tidier.

Do modern pendant lights use integrated LED or replaceable bulbs?

Both, depending on the design. Many use integrated LED, where the light source is built in and the diffuser glows evenly, typically in warm white. Others take standard E27, E14 or GU10 lamps, so you can choose your own bulbs, set the brightness you want and replace them over time. If you need dimming or a specific bulb type, check the individual listing before you order.

Can I use a pendant light in a bathroom?

Not the pendants on this page. Every fitting here carries an IP20 rating, which means it is protected against solid objects but not against water, so it is right for dry indoor rooms such as kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms. Bathrooms need a higher IP rating in most zones, so for those spaces see our bathroom lighting range instead.

How much is delivery, and what if the pendant does not suit the room?

UK delivery is £14.99, and orders of £99 and over qualify for free UK delivery. If a pendant arrives and the size, drop or finish is not right for your room, you can return it within 14 days of delivery; return postage is paid by you and refunds are made in line with our returns policy. We recommend checking the width, drop length and your ceiling height before ordering.
