Plugs, fuses and spurs for fixed and portable kit

This part of the range covers the small parts that connect and protect appliances. Fused spurs and fused connection units give fixed appliances such as extractor fans, boilers and towel rails their own switched or unswitched outlet, with a cartridge fuse sized to the load. Flex outlet plates carry the cable through neatly where a spur feeds a fixed point.

Plugs and adaptors

For portable gear we stock rewireable and moulded mains plugs, converter plugs for travel and mismatched pins, and smart plugs that switch a socket from your phone or by voice. Each lists its rating and any smart-home compatibility.

Fuses for every rating

Cartridge fuses to BS 1362 protect plugs and spurs at 3A, 5A and 13A, while glass and ceramic fuses in 5x20mm and 6x32mm sizes cover electronics and equipment from under 1A up to 20A. Mixed packs are handy for a well-stocked drawer, and fuse holders let you add inline protection to a custom circuit.

Choosing and fitting

Match the fuse to the appliance: 3A for items up to around 700W such as lamps and chargers, 13A for higher-power kit like kettles and heaters. A fused spur should be rated and fused for the appliance it feeds. If in doubt, a qualified electrician can confirm the right rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fused spur and when do I need one?

A fused spur, or fused connection unit, gives a fixed appliance its own outlet from a ring circuit, protected by a cartridge fuse. It suits extractor fans, boilers, towel rails and other kit that is wired in rather than plugged in.

Should I choose a switched or unswitched fused spur?

A switched spur lets you isolate the appliance without touching the fuse, which is useful for servicing. An unswitched spur is a permanent connection, often used where a separate isolator is fitted nearby.

What fuse rating does my plug need?

Use a 3A fuse for appliances up to around 700W, such as lamps, TVs and chargers, and a 13A fuse for higher-power items like kettles, irons and heaters. The appliance rating plate confirms the wattage.

What is the difference between cartridge and glass fuses?

Cartridge fuses to BS 1362 protect UK plugs and fused spurs. Glass and ceramic fuses in 5x20mm and 6x32mm sizes protect electronics and equipment. Check the size and rating of the fuse you are replacing.

What does a converter plug do?

A converter plug lets a two-pin or foreign plug connect safely to a UK three-pin socket, with a fuse fitted for protection. It is a tidy alternative to a loose travel adaptor for regular use.
