12V or 24V: picking a voltage

Most of our flexible tape runs at either 12V or 24V, with 230V mains rope light as a separate option for longer decorative runs. The practical difference shows up over distance. A 24V strip carries power further along the reel before brightness starts to drop, so it tends to suit longer runs such as a full kitchen perimeter or a hallway. 12V strips are common for shorter lengths and smaller jobs. Both need a driver matched to the strip's voltage and load, so check the voltage on the reel against the power supply you plan to use. Anything that ties into fixed mains wiring should be left to a qualified electrician.

Adjustable white, fixed white or colour

For white light, we stock fixed shades from very warm white at 2000K through warm white at 3000K, natural white at 4000K, cool white at 6000K and daylight at 6500K. If you would rather set the tone on the day, CCT tape adjusts across a 3000K to 6000K range from one strip. For colour, RGB tape mixes the spectrum, while RGBW adds a dedicated white channel so you keep a clean white as well as the colour effects. We also carry single-colour reels in red, green, blue and amber, plus UV. COB tape gives a continuous line of light with no visible dots, while SMD tape shows individual diodes along the reel.

IP rating by room

IP rating tells you how protected the strip is against dust and moisture. IP20 tape is for dry indoor spots such as shelves, cabinets and living rooms. For kitchens, splashback zones and anywhere that sees the odd splash, IP65 silicone-coated tape is the safer choice. IP67 suits wetter outdoor positions, and we stock IP68 CCT tape for the most exposed locations. Roughly half of our range is outdoor-rated, so check the IP figure against where the strip will sit before you buy.

Should I choose a 12V or 24V LED strip?
It mainly depends on run length. A 24V strip carries power further along the reel before brightness tails off, which makes it the steadier choice for longer runs like a kitchen perimeter or a hallway. 12V strips are common on shorter lengths and smaller jobs. Whichever you pick, the driver must match the strip's voltage, so check the figure printed on the reel before ordering a power supply.

What is the difference between CCT, RGB and RGBW strips?
CCT tape adjusts white light across a 3000K to 6000K range from a single strip, so you can shift between warm and cool tones. RGB mixes red, green and blue to produce colours. RGBW adds a separate white channel alongside the colour LEDs, so you get a clean white as well as colour effects rather than relying on mixed channels. We also stock fixed single shades and single colours such as red, green, blue and amber.

Which IP rating do I need for a kitchen or outdoors?
IP20 tape is fine for dry indoor positions like shelves and cabinets. For kitchens, splashback areas and anywhere exposed to occasional moisture, choose IP65 silicone-coated tape. For wetter outdoor spots, IP67 is more suitable, and we also stock IP68 CCT tape for the most exposed locations. Around half of our range is outdoor-rated, so match the IP figure to where the strip will be fitted.

Do LED strips need a separate driver?
Low-voltage 12V and 24V strips run from a driver, also called a power supply, that converts mains power down to the strip's voltage. The driver needs to match the strip's voltage and have enough capacity for the load you are running. Some of our colour strips come as kits with a power supply included. Mains 230V rope light runs at mains voltage instead, so it does not use a low-voltage driver. For anything wired into a fixed circuit, use a qualified electrician.

Can LED strip lights be dimmed?
Many of the strips we stock are dimmable, and the tags on each product show whether a given reel supports it. Dimming a low-voltage strip is usually handled through a compatible driver or controller rather than a wall dimmer alone, and colour and CCT strips are typically controlled through their own remote or app. Check the individual product details so the strip, driver and any controller are designed to work together.
