Description
This is the Volute as a wall lantern, the lantern carried above a cast bracket. The Volute is the scrolled one, its bracket curling back on itself under the lantern. The light lifts up the face of the wall as well as falling onto the path below. This is the copper-top version, so the roof weathers to a brown patina while the rest stays black. The Volute sits behind a polycarbonate lens, clear or opal, that will not shatter. The powder paint is baked on rather than sprayed, so it keeps its colour against sun and salt instead of chalking off in a season or two. The opal version is also made with the lamp built in, at 12W, rather than taking a bulb.
What we wanted here was the coach-lamp look in cast aluminium. The shape is usually made in pressed steel, which rusts from the inside once a stone chips it, and this is the version that will still be sound in ten winters. A photograph on a white ground flatters every fitting equally, so the things worth weighing are the ones a picture cannot carry: the rating, the finishes offered and the height. Measure the height in the specification against the wall before you buy.
It fixes to masonry and the cable should enter from behind the backplate wherever the wall allows. Brought in from below, a cable invites water to run down the sheath into the housing, which is how most outdoor wall lights fail long before the fitting does. Wiring is work for a qualified electrician: it wants a terminal approved to EN 60998-2-1 or EN 60998-2-2 in a wiring box rated IP68, which is the manufacturer's own instruction.
