Description

At 30cm the Tambour Louvred bollard stands at ankle to knee height, lighting the ground you walk on and nothing above it. The Tambour Louvred is louvred, six horizontal fins shading an opal cylinder. It is a lantern on a cast pedestal rather than a lantern on a spike. The powder paint is baked on rather than sprayed, so it keeps its colour against sun and salt instead of chalking off in a season or two.

It is extruded as well as cast, which is unusual here and lets the body be a true cylinder rather than a tapered casting. We take it for contemporary houses and for commercial frontages where a period casting would look borrowed. A photograph on a white ground flatters every fitting equally, so the things worth weighing are the ones a picture cannot carry: the rating, the finishes offered and the height. Measure the height in the specification against the path or the drive before you buy. Living with it, the thing to know is that a bollard is walked past rather than looked at. It wants to be far enough off the path edge that a wheelbarrow clears it, and close enough that the light reaches where you put your feet.

The bollard bolts down to a pad or a paver, and the supply cable comes up through the base from below. Set the duct before you lay the surface, because cutting one in afterwards is the hard way round. Wiring is work for a qualified electrician: it wants a terminal approved to EN 60998-2-1 or EN 60998-2-2 in a wiring box rated IP68, which is the manufacturer's own instruction.
