Solar Outdoor Downlight GU10 - Anthracite IP44

The Solar is a 110mm surface-mounted downlight with an anthracite aluminium body, a clear Pyrex glass diffuser, and an IP44 rating. It takes a single GU10 bulb (sold separately) and is designed for ceiling or soffit installation in outdoor and bathroom applications where moisture protection is required. The cylindrical housing sits flush to the mounting surface, directing light downwards through the glass lens.

The IP44 rating protects against water splashes from any direction and solid objects larger than 1mm, making the fitting suitable for covered outdoor areas such as porch ceilings, patio soffits, carport ceilings, and zone 2 or 3 bathroom locations away from direct shower spray. The anthracite finish is a dark grey powder-coated aluminium that resists corrosion and pairs with contemporary architectural colour palettes. The fitting is dimmable when paired with a dimmable GU10 bulb and compatible dimmer.

The Pyrex glass diffuser is harder and more heat-resistant than standard glass, reducing the risk of thermal cracking when the bulb heats up or when exposed to temperature changes in outdoor conditions. The 110mm diameter makes the fitting compact enough for narrow soffit runs or bathroom ceilings with limited clearance. Installation requires surface-mounting the rear plate to a ceiling or soffit with screws (fixings not supplied), then connecting mains power to the terminal block inside the housing before clipping the outer cylinder onto the base.

What bulb does it take?

The Solar takes a single GU10 bulb with a maximum wattage determined by the lamp holder rating (typically 50W halogen or 10W LED equivalent). Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this fitting with a GU10 LED bulb in warm white (2700K-3000K) for outdoor accent or task lighting.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Yes, but placement depends on the bathroom zone. The IP44 rating makes the Solar suitable for zone 2 and zone 3 locations (outside the shower cubicle and away from direct water jets). It is not rated for zone 0 or zone 1 (inside or directly above a bath or shower).

Is it suitable for fully exposed outdoor use?

The IP44 rating protects against splashes and rain when installed under a soffit, porch ceiling, or covered patio. It is not designed for fully exposed locations such as open garden walls or unsheltered facades where rain would hit the fitting from below or sideways. For fully exposed applications, an IP65-rated fitting is recommended.

How is it installed?

The rear mounting plate fixes to the ceiling or soffit with screws. Mains power connects to a terminal block inside the housing. The outer cylindrical body then clips onto the base plate. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with Part P of the UK Building Regulations.
