Solar Outdoor Downlight - Black

The Solar is a 110mm diameter ceiling-mounted downlight in black powder-coated aluminium, fitted with a transparent Pyrex glass diffuser and rated IP44 for outdoor and bathroom installation. The cylindrical body houses a single GU10 bulb (sold separately) behind the glass lens, directing light downwards in a controlled beam suitable for patios, covered entrances, bathroom ceilings and hallway soffits.

Designed for wet-zone bathroom use (zone 2 and 3) and covered outdoor areas such as canopy ceilings, porch soffits and underside-of-balcony mounting, the IP44 rating provides protection against splashing water and dust ingress. The fitting mounts directly to a standard ceiling electrical box and the glass diffuser is secured with a metal retaining ring that allows bulb changes without removing the entire fitting from the ceiling.

The black finish is a smooth powder coat over die-cast aluminium, giving corrosion resistance and a low-sheen surface that minimises reflections in daylight. The 110mm diameter suits standard UK ceiling spacings of 1.2-1.5m in bathroom grids and 1.8-2.4m on outdoor soffits. The fitting is dimmable when paired with a dimmable GU10 LED and compatible dimmer switch, allowing output to be adjusted for ambient or task lighting depending on time of day.

The Pyrex glass diffuser is thermally rated to withstand the heat from halogen GU10 bulbs up to 50W, though most users now pair the Solar with 4-6W LED GU10 bulbs in 3000K or 4000K to reduce running costs and heat output. The aluminium body dissipates heat efficiently, preventing premature LED degradation even in enclosed ceiling cavities.

Can this be used in a bathroom shower zone?

The IP44 rating makes the Solar suitable for bathroom zone 2 (above the bath or shower tray, outside zone 0 and 1) and zone 3 (general bathroom area). It is not rated for zone 0 or 1, which require IP67 or higher. Check the bathroom zone layout before installation.

What GU10 bulb is recommended?

The fitting accepts any standard GU10 bulb up to 50W. For outdoor and bathroom use, a 4-6W LED GU10 in 3000K warm white or 4000K cool white is typical. Ensure the bulb is also rated for damp environments if installing outdoors or in bathrooms.

Is it suitable for uncovered outdoor use?

IP44 protects against splashing water but not direct rain or water jets. The Solar is designed for covered outdoor areas such as porch ceilings, canopy soffits and balcony undersides. For fully exposed outdoor walls or ceilings, an IP65 or IP66-rated fitting is required.

How is the bulb accessed for replacement?

The Pyrex glass diffuser is held by a metal retaining ring that unscrews or unclips (depending on the specific model variant). Once the diffuser is removed, the GU10 bulb is accessible via a quarter-turn bayonet fitting. The entire process takes under a minute and does not require removing the fitting from the ceiling.
