Roots 50cm Pendant Light - Natural Wood Sphere Rings & Black

The Roots is a 50cm pendant light built from concentric rings of natural 5-layer plywood arranged in a sphere cage, suspended from a matt black metal canopy on a black fabric-covered cable. A single E27 bulb (sold separately) sits at the centre of the sphere, casting light through the gaps between the wood rings and onto the surrounding plywood surfaces.

Designed for dining tables, kitchen islands and living room clusters where the fitting hangs unobstructed, the Roots works best in spaces with ceiling heights of 2.4m or above where the drop can be set between 62.5cm and 352.5cm on installation. The layered wood rings cast concentric shadow patterns onto walls and ceilings when lit, so the fitting functions as both task light above a table and decorative accent when viewed from across a room. The adjustable height allows the pendant to be positioned 700-800mm above a dining surface or lowered further for bar-height surfaces.

The plywood rings show the natural grain and tone variation of the wood veneer, so each fitting has slightly different figuring depending on the section of plywood used. The matt black metal canopy, cable cover and bottom cap anchor the sphere visually and provide a neutral frame that pairs with both warm-toned and cooler interiors. The 50cm diameter makes the fitting substantial enough to centre above a 4-6 seat table without overwhelming smaller rooms, and light enough at approximately 2kg to fit standard UK ceiling roses without reinforcement.

What bulb does it take?

The Roots takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2700K to complement the natural wood tone and allow the wood grain to be visible through the rings when lit.

Can the drop height be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The fabric-covered cable allows the drop to be set anywhere between 62.5cm and 352.5cm during installation. Once the cable is trimmed and the canopy fixed, the drop is set permanently unless re-wired.

Does the plywood vary between pieces?

Yes. Each ring is cut from 5-layer plywood, so the grain pattern, figure and tone variation differ between individual fittings depending on the section of veneer used. This is a characteristic of natural wood construction.

What ceiling height is needed?

For a dining table or kitchen island the pendant typically sits 700-800mm above the surface, which works in rooms with ceiling heights of 2.4m or above. Lower ceilings can still accommodate the Roots if the cable drop is shortened during fitting.
