Description

The Roots is a 43cm spherical pendant light built from concentric rings of 5-layer plywood, arranged to form a globe cage around a central E27 bulb fitting. The natural wood rings are finished with protective lacquer to preserve the grain and colour, while the top and bottom caps, suspension rod and canopy are finished in matt black metal.

Designed for dining tables, kitchen islands and living room focal points, the Roots pendant works in spaces with ceiling heights from 2.4m upwards. The fabric-covered black cable is adjustable from 55.5cm to 345.5cm on installation, allowing the pendant to be positioned 700-900mm above a table surface or lower into double-height voids. The spherical cage diffuses light outward through the gaps between the wood rings, creating layered shadow patterns on surrounding walls and ceilings.

The 5-layer plywood construction gives each ring structural rigidity while keeping the overall weight manageable for standard UK ceiling roses. The natural wood tone varies slightly between pieces depending on the plywood veneer batch, ranging from pale birch to mid-tone ash. The black metal hardware includes a threaded rod that runs through the centre of the sphere, holding the rings in alignment and supporting the weight of the structure. The E27 bulb fitting accepts any standard screw-base bulb up to 40W.

Part of Maytoni's Modern Nature collection, the Roots carries an IP20 rating for dry indoor use only. The lacquered plywood surface can be dusted with a dry microfibre cloth but should not be exposed to damp environments or bathroom steam, as moisture can cause the plywood layers to delaminate over time.

What bulb does it take?

The Roots takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2700K for ambient dining or living room light.

Can the wood rings be cleaned?

Yes, but only with a dry or very lightly dampened microfibre cloth. The plywood is lacquered for protection but remains porous — avoid soaking the wood or using chemical sprays, as moisture can cause the plywood layers to separate.

Is it suitable for bathrooms?

No. The IP20 rating and plywood construction make this suitable for dry indoor spaces only. Bathroom steam or outdoor moisture will damage the wood over time.

How is the drop height adjusted?

The fabric-covered cable is adjustable during installation. The pendant can be set anywhere between 55.5cm and 345.5cm from the ceiling rose, allowing it to suit standard ceiling heights or be lowered into taller voids.
