Description
The Philadelphia is a 1.165m outdoor pillar light built around a single E27 lamp holder housed inside a champagne-tinted blown glass lantern. The metal frame carries an old bronze patina finish over cast aluminium, with scrollwork and acanthus leaf detailing at the shoulders and a fluted finial at the top. The entire fitting is rated IP44, making it suitable for exposed UK garden use including driveways, gate pillars and garden walls.
Designed for mounting on brick or stone gate pillars, low boundary walls or rendered entrance piers, the Philadelphia sits on a hexagonal base plate 190mm across. The 1.165m height places the light source at approximately chest height when mounted at ground level, or above head height when the pillar itself is 600-900mm tall. The champagne-tinted glass softens the light output from the E27 bulb, reducing glare while maintaining visibility along driveways and pathways.
The old bronze patina is applied over die-cast aluminium rather than solid bronze, keeping the weight manageable for wall fixing while giving the appearance of aged metalwork. The scrollwork and leaf motifs at the top of the lantern body are cast as part of the frame rather than applied afterwards, so they hold detail under close inspection. The blown glass panels are held in a metal cage that allows individual panes to be replaced if broken, without needing to replace the entire lantern assembly.
The fitting accepts any standard E27 bulb up to 60W. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2200K-2700K to suit the period aesthetic. The IP44 rating protects the lamp holder and internal wiring from rain and dust ingress, but the bulb itself should still be LED or another weather-tolerant type rather than a standard household halogen.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does the Philadelphia take?
The fitting takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. For outdoor use, an LED bulb is recommended for longevity and weather tolerance. Most users choose a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2200K-2700K to complement the period aesthetic and champagne-tinted glass.
Can it withstand UK weather?
Yes. The fitting is rated IP44, meaning it is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashed from any direction. This makes it suitable for exposed UK gardens, driveways and entrance pillars. The old bronze patina finish is applied over die-cast aluminium, which resists corrosion better than ferrous metals in damp climates.
How is it mounted?
The Philadelphia mounts via a hexagonal base plate 190mm across, with fixing holes for screws or bolts. It is designed for brick, stone or rendered pillars and low walls. The internal wiring connects to mains supply routed through the pillar or wall, so installation typically requires a qualified electrician.
Can the glass be replaced if broken?
Yes. The blown glass panels sit in a metal cage and can be replaced individually without replacing the entire lantern. Contact Elstead Lighting or Niori for replacement glass panels specific to the Philadelphia range.
