Steel, aluminium, silicone, PP and PC come together in our Orbit Portable Lamp 18.6cm, a design built around one clear idea: light you can pick up and carry wherever you need it. The form is an opal cylinder held in a slim ring handle, so you can lift it by that loop and set it back down without fuss. At 18.6cm tall and 19.5cm wide, it weighs just 0.4kg, which makes it easy to move from a windowsill to a table and out to a garden bench as the evening goes on.

We gave it a built-in lithium-ion battery that runs for up to 22 hours on a charge, and three light steps to suit the moment. Choose 2700K for a warm glow, 4000K for a neutral white or 6000K for a cooler tone, each at 50 lumen. Charging is straightforward: a USB-C cable and power adaptor are included, and if you own a Qi compatible wireless charger, you can set the lamp down on that instead, though the pad itself is not supplied. Rated to IP44 and certified to UKCA and CE standard for both indoor and outdoor use, it copes with a bit of weather, so we are happy to see it out on a patio table as well as by the bed.

Assembly takes around 2 minutes, and there is a short video to walk you through it if you would rather follow along. The LED panel is built in, and we back the lamp with a 10-year warranty, which tells you how long we expect it to keep working. It suits a table setting, a shelf or a quiet corner, and because it needs no cable once charged, you are free to put it wherever the light is wanted.
