Description
The Medstead is a half-lantern outdoor wall light built around a black die-cast frame with clear glass panels and an integrated PIR motion sensor positioned at the base. The light houses a single E27 bulb (sold separately, maximum 60W) behind the glass, with the PIR providing a 120-degree detection field that activates the light when movement is detected within range.
Designed for front entrances, side gates, porches and garage walls, the Medstead functions as both decorative accent and security lighting. The PIR sensor allows the light to remain off until motion triggers it, reducing energy consumption compared to permanently-lit exterior fittings. The 495mm height and 260mm width give the lantern presence on a wall without overwhelming typical UK porch or doorway proportions, and the 140mm projection clears most brick and rendered walls without fouling door swings.
The IP44 rating protects the internal components against rain and solid debris larger than 1mm, making the fitting suitable for covered and exposed external walls. The black powder-coated finish resists corrosion in coastal and urban environments. Clear glass panels allow full light transmission when the PIR is triggered, casting both direct downlight and scattered side-light through the vertical panes. The traditional coach lantern profile with finial top and moulded frame detailing pairs with Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and also works alongside contemporary brick and render where a classical accent is wanted.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does the Medstead take?
The light takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installations pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for exterior security lighting.
How does the PIR sensor work?
The PIR motion sensor at the base of the lantern detects movement within a 120-degree field and automatically switches the light on when triggered. The sensor can typically be adjusted for sensitivity and duration, allowing you to control how long the light stays on after detecting motion.
Can this be used in fully exposed locations?
Yes. The IP44 rating provides protection against rain and solid debris, making the Medstead suitable for both covered porches and fully exposed external walls. In very exposed coastal locations, regular cleaning of salt deposits will help maintain the finish.
How is it mounted?
The Medstead mounts directly to an exterior wall via a backplate. The 140mm projection clears most standard UK brick and rendered walls. Wiring connects to mains supply via a junction box or outdoor-rated junction inside the wall cavity.
