Description
The Hyde is a solid brass outdoor wall lantern with an aged brass finish, clear glass panels on four sides, and a single E27 bulb fitting inside. The lantern body sits 465mm tall and 210mm wide, with a pyramidal roof topped by a pierced chimney cap and brass ring handle. The frame is hand-crafted from brass sheet and bar, then given an aged patina and sealed with lacquer to slow further oxidation.
Designed for external doorways, porches, garage entrances and garden walls on period and traditional properties, the Hyde carries an IP44 rating for protection against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The 120mm wall projection keeps the lantern clear of door frames and allows the glass panels to cast light downwards and outwards across the threshold. The E27 socket accepts LED, filament or halogen bulbs up to 60W (sold separately), giving flexibility over light colour and intensity.
The aged brass finish shows deliberate tonal variation across the surfaces — darker in recesses, lighter on edges — mimicking decades of weathering on historic exterior metalwork. The lacquer coat slows but does not entirely prevent continued patina development, so the finish will continue to deepen over years of outdoor exposure. The clear glass is set into the brass frame with a silicone seal to keep water out of the lamp chamber while allowing easy access for bulb changes via a hinged door on one side.
Elstead Lighting hand-fabricates the Hyde in the UK and backs it with a lifetime guarantee covering material and manufacturing defects. The lantern is supplied with a brass backplate drilled for wall mounting and internal wiring connections compatible with standard UK outdoor lighting circuits.

Frequently Asked
Is the Hyde suitable for coastal locations?
The brass is lacquered to slow oxidation, but coastal salt exposure will accelerate patina development even through the lacquer. In coastal environments the aged finish will darken more rapidly than inland installations. This is a characteristic of solid brass exterior fittings rather than a defect.
What bulb is recommended?
The E27 socket accepts any standard Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Most users pair the Hyde with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the aged brass finish and clear glass without overpowering the lantern proportions.
How is the bulb accessed for changing?
One of the four glass panels is hinged and secured with a small brass catch. Releasing the catch allows the panel to swing open for bulb access without removing the entire lantern from the wall.
Does the IP44 rating allow installation in fully exposed positions?
IP44 provides protection against water splashes but not against sustained jets or submersion. The Hyde is suited to covered porches, door canopies, or walls with overhanging eaves. In fully exposed positions with no overhead protection, consider a higher IP rating.
