Description

Steel and glass give our Faraday Up Ceiling/Wall Light its quiet character, pairing a fine metal mesh screen with an opal glass globe held at its centre. The screen is circular and open rather than solid, so light passes through the mesh as well as glowing from the globe itself. We finished the metalwork in warm brass, a tone that reads softly against a pale wall and picks up the colour of nearby lamplight. At 45.3cm in diameter and 17.6cm deep, it holds a generous presence without crowding the surface it sits against, and at 2kg it stays easy to handle during fitting.

This is a surface mounted lamp, which means it sits flush to the wall or ceiling rather than hang from a cord. That flexibility lets you use it in more than one way: mounted overhead in a hallway or landing, or placed at eye level beside a doorway or above a reading nook. It takes an E27 bulb up to a maximum 15W LED, and we would suggest a warm-toned light source to bring out the glow of the opal globe. The bulb is not included, so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature that suits the room. Assembly takes around 10min, with the bracket doing most of the work.

We like the Faraday Up because it works as both a functional light and a soft focal point, casting a diffused wash through its mesh screen while the globe carries a steadier core of light. The brass finish suits a scheme built on natural materials, warm neutrals and a little contrast against darker joinery. Fix it in a pair either side of a mirror, or run a single lamp above a bedside table where you want gentle, close light. However you place it, we think it earns its spot.
