Description

This brass cage accessory fits Elstead's Sheldon and Somerton lantern ranges, adding a protective metal framework around the glass panels. The cage is constructed from solid brass bar formed into three horizontal hoops connected by four vertical ribs, creating an open cage structure that shields the glass without obscuring the light output.

Designed to retrofit onto existing Sheldon or Somerton lanterns, the cage clips or secures to the lantern body (fitting method depends on the specific lantern model). The cage provides impact protection for glass panels in high-traffic areas such as front door porches, garden patios, or conservatory entrances where accidental knocks are more likely. The open framework maintains airflow around the lantern, which is important for outdoor installations where moisture condensation can otherwise build up on enclosed glass.

The brass finish develops a natural patina over time when exposed to outdoor weather, darkening and acquiring surface variation that enhances the aged appearance. For indoor use or covered outdoor locations the brass retains a warmer tone closer to its original antique gold colour. The cage adds approximately 20-30mm to the diameter of the lantern depending on which Sheldon or Somerton model it's fitted to, so clearance should be checked before installation in tight alcoves or between narrow pillar gaps.
