Description

The Beacon Hill is a half-wall outdoor lantern with a tiered museum black aluminium frame and heavily seeded glass panels on three sides, housing two E14 candle bulbs (sold separately). The stepped cap and base reference traditional English coach lanterns from the late 18th century, while the aluminium construction and IP44 rating make it suitable for year-round outdoor exposure in the UK climate.

Designed to be surface-mounted on exterior walls flanking entrance doors, in porches, or along garden pathways, the Beacon Hill casts light through the seeded glass which diffuses the bulb filaments into a soft glow rather than harsh points of light. The 439mm height and 249mm width suit most single-storey porch walls and two-storey house facades without overwhelming the architecture. The 137mm projection from the wall allows the fitting to clear most door surrounds and wall-mounted pipework.

The seeded glass texture is achieved by rolling molten glass over a textured surface during manufacture, trapping thousands of tiny air bubbles and irregularities that scatter light. This gives the lantern a hand-crafted appearance and prevents glare when viewing the lit fitting from the side. The museum black finish on the aluminium is a deep charcoal-grey with a very slight sheen, closer to wrought iron than modern matt black powder coating, giving the lantern a period-appropriate look that pairs well with both Victorian brick and contemporary rendered facades.

Frequently Asked

What bulbs does the Beacon Hill take?

The lantern takes two E14 small Edison screw bulbs up to 40W each. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with warm-white LED candle bulbs between 4-6W and 2700K for a soft period-appropriate glow that mimics traditional gas lighting.

Is it suitable for coastal locations?

The IP44 rating protects against rain and splashing from any direction, making it suitable for most UK outdoor locations. The aluminium frame resists corrosion better than steel lanterns, but in coastal areas with salt spray, occasional rinsing with fresh water will extend the finish life.

How is the seeded glass cleaned?

The textured surface of seeded glass traps more dust than smooth glass. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush or sponge, rinsing thoroughly. Avoid abrasive cloths which can scratch the texture and create visible marks when backlit.

Can it be mounted on brick or rendered walls?

Yes. The back plate has fixing holes for wall plugs and screws. On brick, use 50mm No.10 screws with brown wall plugs drilled into the mortar joints rather than the brick itself. On render, ensure the fixings penetrate into the blockwork behind the render layer for secure mounting.
