Description
Passepartout Square is a square wall mirror, 105cm each way and 3.5cm deep, in a symmetrical frame of solid oak. Its distinguishing feature is the glass: the mirrored centre does not stop at a hard edge but passes through a partially transparent border before it meets the wood, so the reflection fades out towards the frame rather than ending abruptly. The name is the mount a gallery sets around a drawing to hold it away from its frame. The design is by Studio Segers.
The square format suits a wall where an upright mirror would look adrift: over a console, on a chimney breast, or centred on a short wall. It hangs in one direction, on two hooks with wall plugs. Because the border is partly transparent the wall colour reads through the outer band, so the piece looks different on a dark wall than on a pale one and the position is worth deciding with that in mind. It is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it to dry rooms. At 12kg it is a comfortable two person lift. The same design is made in two rectangular sizes.
The frame is solid oak rather than a veneer, and the glass is partially transparent and mirrored in one sheet. Wipe the glass with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth and dust the oak dry, keeping standing water off the wood. On an empty wall the transparent band and the mirrored centre read much alike, which is why the mirror is photographed with a card set inside the frame: it is the only way to show where the silvering starts. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.

Frequently Asked
Why does the mirror fade at the edges?
The glass is partially transparent towards the border, so the reflection softens before it reaches the oak rather than stopping at a hard edge.
What is the frame made of?
Solid oak rather than a veneer, symmetrical on all four sides.
Will the wall colour show through?
Yes, through the transparent border, so the piece looks different on a dark wall than on a pale one.
Why is there a card in the photograph?
On an empty wall the transparent band and the mirrored centre look much alike. A card set inside the frame is the only way to show where the silvering starts.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
No. This mirror is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it to dry rooms.
