Description

The Mercury T5A is a 6 x 32mm slow blow glass fuse rated at 5A and 250V, designed to protect electrical equipment that draws high inrush current during start-up without nuisance tripping. The time-delay element allows temporary current spikes to pass harmlessly while still breaking the circuit if a sustained overload or short circuit occurs.

Slow blow fuses suit motors, transformers, amplifiers, projectors and other inductive loads where the initial power-on surge can briefly exceed the rated current before settling to normal operating levels. A fast-acting fuse would blow immediately on these spikes, requiring constant replacement. The T5A's time-delay filament absorbs short-duration surges and only breaks when the overload is sustained beyond safe limits.

The 6 x 32mm glass tube format is a standard size for panel-mount fuse holders, inline fuse carriers and equipment internal fuse clips. The glass construction allows visual inspection of the filament to confirm whether the fuse has blown. Each fuse is rated to IEC standards for consistent breaking capacity and meets the T (time-delay) designation for slow blow characteristics. Supplied in packs of 10.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between slow blow and fast acting fuses?

Fast-acting fuses break immediately when current exceeds the rated value. Slow blow fuses tolerate brief current spikes (typically lasting milliseconds to a few seconds) before breaking, making them suitable for equipment with high start-up current like motors and transformers.

Can I replace a fast-acting fuse with a slow blow?

Only if the equipment manufacturer specifies a time-delay fuse. Using a slow blow fuse where a fast-acting type is required can allow dangerous overloads to persist longer than the circuit is designed to handle.

How can I tell if the fuse has blown?

The glass body allows visual inspection. A blown fuse will have a visibly broken filament wire inside the tube, often with black or brown discolouration on the glass if the break was caused by a sustained overload.

What does T5A mean?

T designates time-delay (slow blow) characteristics per IEC standards. 5A is the rated current — the fuse will carry 5A continuously without breaking, but will blow if sustained overload occurs.
