Description

The AV:Link ground loop isolator connects between two pieces of audio equipment using RCA plug inputs on one end and RCA socket outputs on the other, breaking the direct earth connection that causes mains hum. A transformer inside the 60cm cable isolates the ground path while allowing the audio signal to pass through, removing the low-frequency buzz that occurs when two devices share different earth potentials.

Ground loop hum typically appears when connecting a turntable to an amplifier, a CD player to powered speakers, or AV equipment to a home cinema system where multiple devices are plugged into different mains sockets or extension leads. The isolator sits inline between the source device and the receiving device, with the RCA plugs connecting to the output sockets on the source and the RCA sockets accepting standard RCA plugs from the receiving equipment.

The 60cm cable length provides enough reach to position the isolator away from tight equipment stacks where physical space is limited, while keeping signal runs short enough to avoid introducing additional noise or degradation. Gold-plated RCA connectors resist oxidation and maintain clean contact with both male and female RCA terminals. The red and black colour-coding on the connectors indicates left and right stereo channels.

Frequently Asked

What causes ground loop hum?

Ground loop hum occurs when two audio devices are connected via both an audio cable and separate mains earth paths, creating a loop. Small differences in earth potential between the two mains sockets cause a current to flow through the loop, which manifests as a low-frequency hum (typically 50Hz or 100Hz in the UK) in the audio signal.

Does this affect audio quality?

The transformer isolation introduces a very small amount of high-frequency roll-off, typically inaudible in most domestic audio systems. The benefit of eliminating mains hum far outweighs the minimal signal change for the majority of users experiencing ground loop issues.

Can it be used with turntables?

Yes, but only if the turntable has a built-in phono preamp or you are connecting it through a separate phono stage first. The isolator does not provide RIAA equalisation and should not be placed directly between a turntable cartridge and a phono input.

Which end connects to which device?

The RCA plug end connects to the output sockets on your source device (CD player, turntable, media player). The RCA socket end accepts standard RCA plugs from the cable running to your amplifier or powered speakers.
