Description

A lampshade, 40cm wide, in grey. The taper pushes light downward rather than outward. That is right over a chair you read in and wrong if the lamp is expected to light the whole room. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A shade is the cheapest way to change a light. The fitting stays, the wiring stays, and the character of the room moves — which is why replacing shades is usually the first thing worth doing in a house you have just moved into.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. Natural cotton has a slight irregularity in the weave that catches light unevenly, and that is what stops a plain fabric looking flat. It is lined in white, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade tapers from 40cm at the bottom to 34cm at the top. Shade reducer: Yes.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
