A table lamp, 45cm wide, in grey. At 45cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. Glazed ceramic is fired hard enough to wipe clean and heavy enough to stay where it is put. It will chip rather than dent if it goes over, so it belongs where it is not being knocked. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price.

It takes 1 E27 screw-fit bulb up to 10-12W LED. E27 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with an in-line switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. It weighs 4.3kg, which is enough to stay put when the flex is tugged. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. A pair reads as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two will sit either side of a bed without crowding the table.
