Description

A hurricane lamp, 63cm tall, in grey. At 23cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. An odd number of candles at different heights reads as arranged; an even number at the same height reads as a place setting. Both are useful, for different evenings.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. Glass reads differently depending on what is behind it, which is why the same piece looks warm against a painted wall and cool against a window. It also means it wants cleaning more often than an opaque finish does.

Look for a drip lip or a wide foot if it is going on a polished surface, because wax on wood is far harder to remove than wax on stone.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
