Description

A ginger jar, 26cm tall, in deep blue. At 19cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Height decides the position. A tall vase is a floor or a console piece and needs space around it; a low one belongs on a table where it is looked down into rather than across at.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. The lid is what separates storage from display. Closed, the contents stop being part of the room; open, it is a container like any other, so the question is where the lid goes while you are using it. Fired ceramic is hard, wipeable and heavy enough not to travel when it is knocked. It will chip rather than dent, so it belongs somewhere it is not being caught by a sleeve.

At 2.05kg it is heavy enough to stand on the floor without being knocked over by a passing foot.

Check whether it is watertight before you rely on it. Plenty of decorative vases are not glazed inside, and are meant for dried stems or for holding a glass liner rather than water.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
