A pendant light, 50cm wide, in grey. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A pendant is the one light in a room that people look at directly, because it hangs in the sightline rather than sitting at the edge of it. That is worth remembering over a table, where it will be at eye level for everyone sitting down.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. Jute is a coarse, matt fibre with a natural biscuit colour that dyes unevenly and looks better for it. It is strong under tension, which is why it has been made into rope for centuries. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price. Shade reducer: Yes.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.

Height is the decision, not diameter. Over a dining table a pendant wants its lowest point around 75 to 85cm above the table top, which is low enough to light the surface and high enough to see across. In a hallway or over an island the same fitting wants to be higher.
