Description

A garden parasol, 3m across, in anthracite. With the mast off to one side there is no pole coming up through the table, which is the only reason to choose a cantilever. The trade is a heavier base, because the load is now off-centre. At 257cm it stands taller than a standard interior door. Shade is the one thing that decides whether a garden table gets used in July. A canopy this size covers the seated area rather than just the table top, which is the difference between eating outside and moving indoors by two o'clock.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. Aluminium does not rust, and outdoors that is the only material question that matters in the long run. Painted steel will eventually find a scratch and start bleeding from it; this will not. Acrylic cloth holds colour against sunlight far better than cotton or polyester, which is why it is the fabric used on things that live outdoors through a summer. It sheds water rather than soaking it up.

A base is required and is sold separately, and on a free-arm parasol it has to be heavier than a centre pole would need. Aluminium frame. A cover is available for it.

Two things get missed when buying a parasol: the base, which is bought separately and has to be heavy enough for the canopy rather than merely tidy, and where the shade actually falls. Shade moves with the sun, so a parasol that covers the table at one o'clock will not cover it at four unless it can be tilted or turned.
