A lampshade, 40cm wide, in black. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Polyester holds colour better than any natural fibre. It does not fade in a sunlit room, does not shrink, and takes a wipe rather than a wash, which is why it is the fibre of choice where a fabric has to last. It is lined in white, polyester lining: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade tapers from 40cm at the bottom to 20cm at the top. Shade reducer: Yes.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
