A floor lamp, 45cm wide, in satin brass. At 45cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

Warm metals show fingerprints far less than a polished cool finish, because the tone is closer to the oils that leave them. What they do show, eventually, is a gentle darkening at the places most often handled. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price.

It takes 1 E27 screw-fit bulb up to 10-12W LED. E27 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. At 4.8kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one.
