A floor lamp, 45cm wide, in matt black. At 45cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price.

It takes 1 E27 screw-fit bulb up to 10-12W LED. E27 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. There is no dimmer, so the character of the light is set by the bulb you choose: 2700K reads warm, 4000K reads cool and clinical. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

A felt base means it can sit on a waxed top without leaving a ring. At 4.94kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
