Description

A lampshade, 30cm wide, in black. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 30cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Changing a shade changes a room without touching the wiring, which makes it the cheapest worthwhile change in a house you have just moved into.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. A polyester and cotton blend is a deliberate compromise: the handle and breathability of cotton with the colour retention and easy care of polyester. It creases less than pure cotton and feels warmer than pure polyester. It is lined in matching self-lining: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. Shade reducer: Yes.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window.
