Description

A pendant light, 55cm wide, in ivory. At 55cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A pendant is the one light in a room that people look at directly, because it hangs in the sightline rather than sitting at the edge of it. That is worth remembering over a table, where it will be at eye level for everyone sitting down.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. Blending is what makes a fabric practical without making it feel synthetic — enough cotton to be pleasant against the skin, enough polyester to survive being washed. It is lined in silver, metalic card: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. It comes with its shade, so there is no second purchase to make it usable. Shade reducer: Yes.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
