Description

A bench, 150cm wide, in wood. At 150cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A bench does two jobs no chair does: it seats more people in the same length, and it slides fully under a table when it is not in use.

Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same.

The seat sits at 40cm, which suits a 74 to 76cm table. It is rated to 260kg. A cover is available for it. It needs partial assembly. Arms at 64cm clear most table aprons.

Hard seats have one clear advantage: nothing to compress, stain or flatten, so the chair is the same in ten years as on the first day. A pad or a sheepskin is the usual answer where a meal runs long. Anything sat on daily loosens eventually. Checking and nipping up the fixings once a year is the whole of the maintenance, and it is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that develops a wobble it never loses. Check the height against the table: a bench wants the same 45cm seat a dining chair has, and a few centimetres out is felt immediately. It will last longer stored or covered over winter than left out in it.
